The National Golf League (NGL) was founded in early 2005 and played its first season that fall. Six teams from Northern California played six tournaments, with the Davis Zone team winning the first league championship.
League founder Bob Aube says, "Our customers are the fans. They want to be entertained and they want to be appreciated for supporting the sport. The NGL adds enthusiasm, passion and entertainment to the game of golf."
The NGL's first season was an unqualified success, from the perspectives of both the players and the fans.
The players appreciate the Team Play
concept - a bad shot or two doesn't kill
their team's chances to win a tournament
and they get to 'go for it' on every hole.
No playing it safe because pars aren't
going to win too many points in this league.
And the fans 'get it.' They love the
rock 'n' roll aggressive style of tournaments
and they like the fun atmosphere, and
they appreciate the opportunity to interact
with their team's players and root for
the home team.
The NGL has expanded to Southern California
in 2006 with six new teams - Channel Islands
Sharks, OC Wedge, LA Stars, San Diego
Spikes, Palm Springs Extreme Heat and
the Inland Empire Styx.
The top three teams from the Southern and Northern California Divisions will meet in Palm Springs on November 11, 2006 to compete for the NGL Championship and $24,000 in prize money.
Founder Aube's vision is to expand steadily and to eventually have 8-10 six-team divisions from coast to coast. League expansion plans for 2007 presently include divisions in Arizona and Florida. |
